Breast Cancer

Breast Cancer is the most common cause of cancer related death in Women in Australia. One in 11 women will be diagnosed with the disease before the age of seventy five.

The cause of breast cancer in women is not exactly known although risk factors for the disease have been established. The presence of a risk factor does not mean that a woman will contract Breast Cancer.

Some Risk Factors for breast cancer are as follows;

  • Getting Older
  • Having a family history of breast cancer
  • Having been previously diagnosed with breast cancer.
  • Starting menstruation at a relatively early age.
  • Not having children or having the first after 35 years of age
  • Not breast feeding
  • Putting on a lot of weight in adulthood
  • Drinking alcohol (more than two standard drinks a day).

As there is currently no means of preventing breast cancer The National Breast Cancer Centre recommends regular breast screening for women aged over 50 years. Women are encouraged to be aware of the normal look and feel of their breasts and to see a general Practitioner immediately should they notice any unusual signs or symptoms.
