Prostate Cancer
Prostate Cancer is the second most common cause of cancer
death among Australian Men, after lung cancer. It mainly affects
men in older age groups and is rare in men under 50 years
of age. Prostate cancer is recognised as one of the slower
growing cancers and it is for this reason it is said “many
men die with prostate cancer and not from it”. Invariably
an individual will succumb to another health disorder before
they prostate cancer.
Having stated this it is also true that Prostate Cancer in
younger males is generally more aggressive and the disease
also seems to be becoming more prevalent with increases in
life expectancy overall.
There are three common disorders of the prostate and prostate
cancer is one of these although all disorders have similar
symptoms. These are;
- Waking frequently at night to urinate
- Sudden or urgent need to urinate
- Difficulty in starting to urinate
- Slow flow of urine and difficulty in stopping
- Discomfort when urinating
- Painful ejaculation
- Blood in urine or semen
- Decrease in sexual drive
- Reduced ability to get an erection.

The opportunity to cure an individual of prostate cancer
is enhanced if it is detected early. You should make an appointment
with your General Practitioner and discuss any concerns that
you might have. Remember also that a regular check up with
your GP is a good strategy on a full range of health issues.
