Alcohol and Women

Women tend to reach higher blood alcohol content levels than men with the same alcohol consumption due to their higher fat content. A muscular person will have a lower concentration than a person with the same weight with more fat because alcohol is not absorbed by muscle tissues.

Around 32% of women usually consume alcohol above the recommended NHMRC low-risk levels.

Two-thirds of young female drinkers are heavy drinkers: the highest incidence in any population group.

Some women may have a family predisposition to alcoholism.

Smart Drinking for Women

No more than two standard drinks a day.

Plan to have at least three alcohol free days a week.
