Alcohol and Men

Most men are able to deal with a greater quantity of alcohol than women. However men are more vulnerable to drinking hazardously. The belief of many Australian men that alcohol abuse is a macho past time perpetuates a culture of heavy drinking. Dysfunctional and harmful use occurs more frequently in males. With increased exposure it is more likely men will develop alcohol dependence.

Some males may have a family predisposition to alcoholism.

Around 18% of men usually consume alcohol above the recommended National Health and Medical Research Councils low risk levels.

Smart drinking for men

No more than four standard drinks per day.

Plan to have at least three alcohol free days each week.
